Keep organized

As a freelance writer, it is absolutely crucial that you stay organized.  Make sure that you keep the following things in order:

-previous work

-current work (always back up your work)

-queries/applications (emails and print)

-invoices (paid/unpaid)

-contracts/agreements

-tax records

-client/editor contact information (email addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers, street addresses)

-your portfolio (of course)

You never know when you will need to access these things, so make sure you keep them categorized and in a safe place so you can access them when you need to. Having a hard drive back up is a very good idea. Even if you keep all of your records electronically, create separate folders for the different categories that I have mentioned. Having print versions of at least some things is a good idea as well. Make sure you have folders to separate your papers and don’t be afraid to get a file box or filing cabinet.

Keeping organized will help you keep your sanity, save you time when you need to find things, and improve your efficiency in servicing clients. It is well worth it, and I highly recommend it.
