Keeping Healthy as a Freelance Writer

Let’s face it, being a freelance writer does not burn a lot of calories. It is actually quite possible to go for long periods of time sitting at a desk doing little more than thinking and typing. It is important to take care of your health so that you can avoid sick days. As I discussed yesterday, being sick can take you away from your work at the most inconvenient of times.

Tips to keep you healthy when freelance writing:

-Sleep. Your body needs to rejuvenate itself daily. You need adequate sleep so that your immune system, and all of your other functions, have a chance to be restored. I know, it seems like a waste of time when you could be writing, but sleeping is worth it.

-Exercise. Since sitting down comes with the job, you will have to schedule time to move your body. You can walk, jog, do aerobic, lift some weights, or do some yoga. You may even want to take a class. Whatever you do, get up and burn some calories every once in a while. This will not only keep you healthy, but more alert and more productive. Oh yes, exercising can boost your mood, too.

Eat healthy. Eating a balanced diet can help boost your energy as well. If you eat too much junk food, your energy level can crash and you could face fatigue. Fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins are full of nutrients that will feed your freelance writing brain. If you don’t want to give up cookies or chips, at least limit your intake while you are working. You should also take a vitamin supplement in case your diet is lacking important nourishment.

-Don’t eat at your computer. There are a lot of germs on your keyboard. If you eat while you work, you are consuming unhealthy bacteria, guaranteed. Eat away from your work station, and wash your hands before and after you eat.

-Keep your work area clean. I wipe down my keyboard with a sanitary wipe and dry it with a paper towel often. While it may not look dirty, I know that something lurks beyond human sight. You should dust weekly and vacuum to keep allergens from gathering. Spraying an air sanitizer can help rid your workspace of airborne germs as well.

Stay healthy, and keep writing!

  1. Shoot. I do great on the first three, but I definitely eat at the computer and I don’t clean my workspace anywhere near as often as you do.

  2. I eat at my computer, too…

    I really need to stop that! There’s a better chance of me eating elsewhere in the warmer month, though. Like on the back patio, out in the sun.
